思南历史悠久，源远流长。汉末年间置县，元设宣慰司，明清建府，民国设专员公署。司、府、署历经500多年。得乌江航运之便，自古商贾云集，经贸繁荣，是乌江中下游地区商品集散地，政治经济文化中心，为贵州开发最早的县份之一，素有“黔中首郡”之称。
绚丽多彩的乌江画廊源于自然的造化和馈赠。这里有山的磅礴大气、有泉的千娇百媚、有水的温柔多情，有蕴藏于高天厚土之下富集的矿产资源。思南石林，鬼斧神工，是地球上同纬度地区迄今发现的发育最好、生态保持最佳、保存最完整、出露面积最大的极具科普性和观赏性的连片喀斯特石林，出露面积近5平方公里，被评为贵州思南乌江喀斯特国家地质公园，是全国首批国土资源科普基地。地热资源，天赐神汤，11个泉点日出水量1.2万吨，被中国矿业联合会命名为“全国温泉开发利用示范区”。水系发达，电能充沛，不计乌江干流，水能理论蕴藏量10.36万千瓦，可开发水能5.9万千
